Why sign the petition to pass Evelynn's law?
Child Abuse is a major cause of death in infants. Up to half of the deaths related to child abuse are
due to Shaken Baby Syndrome. Shaken Baby Syndrome effects children up to 5 years old. Shaken
Baby Syndrome and child abuse are completely preventable, yet the numbers in statistics keep
rising. Many of the perpetrators are often set free. Some perpetrators, like in the case of Baby
Sarah Jane Donohue, are set free to abuse more children. Approximately 1,4OO babies are
reportedly shaken each YEAR. Here on Long Island, suffolk county holds the highest rates of child
abuse in the country. Many perpetrators spend less than 6 months in jail, if any time. Those who do
a sufficient amount of jail time, many times end up killing themselves or threaten to kill themselves. -
Not because they regret what they did to the baby who either died or is confined to a life of
disabilities, but because they can't handle the justice within the walls of the jail. Because Shaken
Baby Syndrome is just now being diagnosed, recognized, and taught, many perpetrators feel as
long as they give the same story that every perp does, "She stopped breathing so i shook her so
she would breathe.", they believe they can get away with either killing a baby, or disabling them for
the rest of their lives. No baby should ever die because they cried. Please sign this petition to
enforce sufficient jail time for all offenders.
