Evelynn's Story
On April 5, 2007 everyone's lives became brighter as Evelynn Marie Biondo made
her entrance into the world. A beautiful, healthy, chubby cheeked nine pound baby
with her whole life ahead of her. Over the next eleven weeks, Evelynn grew, and
smiled, and laughed as she got to know the world around her.
On Sunday June 24th 2007, Alicia Biondo, Evelynn's mother received a phone call
while at work from her then eleven week old daughter Evelynn's father, Joshua
Cohen, and her world came to a screeching halt, never to be the same again.
Joshua was saying that Evelynn was making funny noises. Alicia asked Joshua to
bring her up to her job, which he did and Alicia immediately noticed that Evelynn was
unresponsive. Alicia called an ambulance where they did a cat scan and several
other tests. They noticed that she had bleeding on the brain from front to back due to
blunt forced trauma. She was then transferred to Stony Brook Hospital where both
Joshua and Alicia were interrogated. After about 3 hours of questioning Alicia was
told that Joshua had admitted to pushing Evelynn off the bed where she hit her head
on the bed post. He then kicked her in the head 5 times and shook her. He admitted
to doing it because he was tired and it was her feeding time so she was fussing to
eat. Joshua is currently charged with three felonies and is held in jail on 500,000 bail,
a million bond. Evelynn has proven to be a fighter again and again. She spent days
in a drug induced coma to try and stop her seizures, she was breathing on a
ventilator, yet miraculously she recovered all life threatening issues and was released
from the hospital in twelve days. While that was a true miracle, Evelynn still has a
rough road ahead of her. Evelynn still has many obstacles to overcome as she faces
the challenges of neurological damage leading to low muscle tone and retinal
hemorrhages that have caused blindness that has not resolved yet.
